As Thailand's well-established holiday hotspot, Phuket is blessed with a huge variety of places to call home during your visit – from boutique hotels and jungle hideouts to the sprawling big-name blockbusters perched on sugar-cane beaches. Most of the best hotels in Phuket are found dotted around the bays of the west coast, but there's something to draw you in no matter where you pitch up. The quiet shores of Cape Panwa, the buzzy nightlife of Patong and the beaches of Surin, Rawai, Bangtao, Kata and Karon included.
Opportunity for fun abounds in Phuket, where warm waters teem with marine life (if you're a keen scuba diver like me, you'll find heaven in its rich coral and clear visibility), and postcard-pretty bays attract keen kayaking tourists in their droves. Book a tour of Phang Nga Bay and its prehistoric limestone caves, also making stops at Koh Phi Phi, James Bond Island and Maya Bay (yes, the one where The Beach was filmed). Don't do as many tourists do and bypass the cultural hub of Phuket town, where rainbow-painted shopfronts line the bustling streets and vendors sell authentic, affordable Thai cuisine. Chalong is also well worth a day trip to see the giant Buddha.
That being said, Phuket is also a place where those drained from the weight of life come to rest their weary heads. When I first visited the Pearl of the Andaman post-pandemic, I was yearning for a quiet sanctuary – somewhere where my tired mind and body could recuperate – and I'm not sure I could have picked somewhere better. No-one will blame you if you spend your time on this diverse island – one of rolling verdant rainforests, powdery white beaches stretching to miles of electric blue sea, and dramatic sea stacks soaring from emerald green waters – simply being. Soaking in the views, the sunshine, the culture, and the enviable laidback way of life. It will do you wonders.

Best for architecture
One of the grand dames of the Phuket hotel scene, The Surin is a favourite amongst well-heeled jet-setters. Repeat bookers come back for the idyllic location, top-tier service and of course, the aesthetics. It’s easy to see why: conceived by the late architect Ed Tuttle (celebrated for the Aman hotels), it’s all clean lines, bold use of colour and minimalist chic, with a talking point hexagonal swimming pool at the heart of it all. Rooms all face the ocean, with private plunge pools to cool off in, plus you’ll have easy access to Pansea Beach, one of the prettiest in Phuket (and least touristy). Water sports are de rigueur, with a particularly comprehensive amount of kit (think kayaks, catamarans, body boards and snorkels) but you’d be just as welcome to join one of the twice-weekly yoga sessions. The Lomtalay is the hotel’s signature restaurant, serving all the usual international fare (Caesar salad, check, cheeseburger, check) while a pop-up seafood spot opens in the summer months.

Best for personal touches
Located on an idyllic stretch of coastline in western Phuket close to the popular Surin beach, Twinpalms MontAzure is the very definition of a tropical oasis, with verdant gardens and palm trees galore – and even coconut water on tap. Boasting spacious accommodation (think one or two bedroom villas, or penthouses with rooftop pools), fine dining (including the particularly popular Michelin-starred Wagyu Steakhouse) and a newly opened spa (with six treatment rooms), there’s plenty to recommend this beachside paradise. It’s all about the individual guest experience here, with personalised pillows, room fragrances and even flowers. There’s a distinctly grown-up atmosphere too – no dive bombing in the pool, please. With four restaurants to choose from – including Sea.Salt.Fire, which specialises in… you’ve guessed it, seafood, salt and barbeque – there’s little reason to leave the resort, though if you did, the concierge would be more than happy to organise bookings or excursions further afield.

One of the three filming locations for season 3 of The White Lotus, Anantara Mai Khao is as luxurious as we’ve come to expect from the hit TV show’s settings. It certainly feels fairly White Lotus coded upon arrival, where you are greeted with a flower garland and welcome juice. Situated just 20 minutes from the airport, it’s particularly handy if you’re only in Phuket for a few days, as you can really make the most of your time – some suites even come with their own kitchenette, so you can dine in your room at leisure, maximising that relaxation (or sunbathing) time. The resort itself is blissful, with discreet villas set amidst lily-pad strewn waters, and no danger of being overlooked from your private pool. The main hotel pool is a must-visit too though – even if simply for a cocktail at the swim-up bar.

Best for celebrity spotting
The Nai Harn boasts one of the best beachside locations in all of Thailand, all soft white sands and glittering emerald waters. It’s no wonder then that it has attracted the international jet-set in the four decades since it first opened – everyone from former James Bond actor Roger Moore to Prince Albert of Monaco. Unlike other hotels in the area, there’s less of a leaning on local style, with a distinctly Mediterranean feel to things, whether that’s daybeds that could be transplanted from the French Riviera or white-washed walls à la the Cyclades. Though the swimming pool is a little on the smaller side, you’ve always got the beach, plus a plethora of free watersports and gym sessions to take part in. Head to the rooftop for sundowners – it’s got some of the best views in Phuket. The restaurants are popular not only with guests but with locals and other tourists who aren’t staying at the hotel too, so be sure to make a reservation to avoid disappointment.
