I'm a fashion editor and these are the 13 things I always have in my capsule wardrobe

People – and magazines, admittedly – throw around the phrase ‘capsule wardrobe’ a lot, but what does it really mean?
Is it just owning a very small number of items? Is it only owning simple, frequently repeatable pieces? Is it sacrificing your sense of personal style and getting rid of all your clothes that aren't considered ‘curated’ or ‘timeless’? Well, sort of, sort of, and no, would be our answer.
It doesn't mean you have to avoid ‘personality pieces’ (those more statement items of clothing that make both you and your outfit come alive) and it doesn't mean you should only wear neutrals, but it does mean you should focus most of your attention on the more versatile items that can be mixed and matched seamlessly to create numerous different outfit configurations.
Sure, buy the multicoloured patchwork trench coat or cobalt blue leather jacket that go with nothing in your current wardrobe if they're singing to you and you need a new coat, but don't buy them instead of a more versatile, timeless coat that would make getting dressed in the morning a whole lot simpler.
While I'll admittedly never be able to stick to a minimalist, micro wardrobe (one can dream), I'm definitely a big advocate for decluttering and owning style capsules or adhering to some form of capsule dressing, especially since learning that the average woman wears just 20% of her wardrobe 80% of the time. I know I'm certainly guilty of it.
According to Pinterest Predicts, this is how we'll be dressing next year.

We have wardrobes bursting full of clothes that we bought with every good intention, every specific occasion in mind, but for one reason or another – often our fear of stepping outside of our comfort zone in real life as opposed to confidently shopping online – they never get worn.
But do you ever think about the journey that that specific piece has been on prior to its destination at the back of your wardrobe?
With more and more awful truths about the industry's ethical and sustainable failures being exposed every day, it's time to really confront this issue of waste. One way of doing so, and perhaps the simplest, is to make sure that when you're shopping, you're really investing in timeless pieces that you'll never grow tired of. Pieces you'll happily wear over and over again. In other words, it's time to jump on that 'capsule wardrobe' bandwagon.
Less cringey than it sounds, the concept really just refers to having clothes in your wardrobe that you actually wear and not having *any* that you don't. It is, essentially, what a regular wardrobe should be, but we've misused them to such an extent that we now have to add the prefix.
So, how do you build a perfect capsule wardrobe? Below, we break down a few tips and share the 13 key pieces to use as a starting point to build your wardrobe around.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe consists of a carefully curated handful of key pieces you know you will always wear, which can be mixed and matched to suit your various needs. Minimal items, maximal use.
Where do I start in building a capsule wardrobe?
Start by identifying the 10 pieces you find yourself always reaching for when you're in a rush to get out the door – Marie Kondo your wardrobe, if you will. These are often pieces that you know fit well and go with almost anything, and, most importantly, make you feel confident. This could be a button-up shirt you adore or a cashmere knitted dress - or even a pair of perfectly-fitting black leggings or a crisp white tee - that makes you feel effortlessly polished. Once you've identified these items (try to stick to under 15), move to the next step.

How to identify what you’re missing?
After my seasonal swap last month, I noticed that I was seriously lacking in trousers. Often when I shop online, I'm often drawn to statement jumpers or dresses but forget to invest in good trousers. Perhaps for you it's a versatile cardigan or a midi skirt. If, when you put on an item from your MVP personal style staples, you find yourself going, “I wish I had something to wear with this,” take a mental note of the missing wardrobe essentials. Maybe your wardrobe is a little imbalanced.

Can I wear trend-led pieces and keep a capsule wardrobe?
It's easy to get caught up in trends, especially with the speed with which certain items suddenly flood our feeds. The trick is knowing which ones have staying power, or that you will still love long after their shelf life.
In my younger days, I was certainly a victim of these fleeting crushes, rendering my wardrobe a graveyard of neon tees and cowboy belts. Now older, and hopefully wiser, I've become better at identifying the trendy items that I will tire of by the next season. I stayed away from capri pants last summer, for example, because I know they never have and never will suit me.
That's not to say there aren't trending items that are just good investments. The quiet luxury bags, for instance or the ballet flats, will always be relevant. A good rule of thumb is to see if you can think of at least three outfits this trendy piece can go with, then maybe it's more than just a fad.
What does a capsule wardrobe consist of?
A good capsule wardrobe will vary depending on personal style. It's a misconception that capsule clothing means it has to be minimalist or boring. One of my core capsule items is a statement jumper which is a lot more whimsical than most lists might advise. But there are core categories that most people need to own to address all the different occasions in your day-to-day life. Those items usually include: Jeans, coat, blazer, jumper, LBD, tote bag, flats, heels and trainers.
How many clothes should be in a capsule wardrobe?
I would be a hypocrite no matter what number I gave you, but I can say that in an ideal world, I'd aspire to have between 20-30 items in my wardrobe, including variations of certain staples (ie: a dark denim and a light jean).
While I'm certainly not a good example of someone who has nailed the micro wardrobe, I can, however, share the 13 essentials I always have in my closet that I turn to time and time again, for those of you looking for inspiration on filling out your own minimalist capsule wardrobe.
Why you can trust us
You won't be surprised to hear that, as Fashion Editors, Charlie and Rosie have researched, shopped, tried-on and road-tested more than a few key wardrobe buys. It is their job, after all. But not only that, they've also keenly analysed shopping habits - both their own and their readers' - and are acutely aware of where so many of us trip up when curating a wardrobe; impulse buys, seduced by fleeting trends and lack of versatility being some of the more common mistakes. So after well over a decade of both professional and personal research, we can confidently say that the concepts and items recommended in this edit are not only worth your consideration but are also ones you'll return to time and time again, year after year, season after season.
How we test the best capsule wardrobe pieces
Sure, fashion is subjective - but the experience of getting ready in the morning is generally quite universal. We're all quite exhausted. We want to feel confident. We want to limit stress and confusion. And we don't want to spend all of our savings. So we've put together our ultimate guide of capsule wardrobe items that we truly believe nail it across the board. What makes them so great? Chic pieces, yes, but also timeless, universally flattering silhouettes, un-fussy details, a classic color palette and every day comfort.
