27 long bob hairstyles that prove the cut is eternally chic
Struggling to figure out your next hair move? The long bob, better known as the lob, is one of those rare cuts that never seems to lose relevance. While bobs in general have become a modern staple, thanks to the endless variations that keep popping up, the lob continues to sit in its own lane. We have seen everything from the cup bob to the flicked bob to the nineties revival bob appear on repeat, all with their own moment in the spotlight. The challenge often comes later, when those sharper cuts start to grow out and you are not quite sure which direction to take next.
The beauty of the lob is that it works as both a destination and a transition. It is a genuinely stylish haircut in its own right, yet it also serves as the perfect midpoint between a bob that is creeping past its prime and long hair that you feel ready to refresh. The length sits in a sweet spot that balances ease with elegance. If you are coming from waist length hair, a lob feels breezy, freeing and surprisingly low effort. If you are growing out a bob, it retains enough polish to skim gracefully along the collarbones without looking like an in between stage. It also gives you the freedom to pull your hair back into a ponytail or clip it up on busy days, something many shorter cuts cannot offer.
One of the reasons the lob stays so popular is that it flatters almost every texture. Straight hair looks sleek and sculpted, especially when paired with a slight bevel at the ends. Wavy hair becomes instantly beachy, creating that relaxed softness that requires minimal styling. Curly hair gains shape and definition because the length is long enough to allow coils to spring, yet short enough to prevent the weight from dragging them down. Even braided styles look incredible in lob form, creating a structured yet playful finish.
There is also a lot of personalisation available within a single cut. You can experiment with layers to create movement, or keep everything blunt for a more graphic effect. A side part can give the lob a retro feel, while a centre part keeps it modern. Colour can also elevate the look, whether you choose balayage highlights that illuminate the ends or a single rich shade that enhances the clean silhouette. Every small tweak brings out a different side of the lob, which is why so many people return to it again and again.
At its core, the lob is a cut that feels current, unfussy and endlessly wearable. It adapts to your lifestyle, plays well with every styling mood and delivers that effortless cool girl finish without much commitment. In other words, it is very hard to go wrong with a lob.
Here's everything you need to know about the lob and how to style it…
What is a lob?
“A lob is very simply a longer bob, think collarbone length, a very clean shape, loads of movement. It’s the perfect middle ground between short and long,” top hairstylist Jack Luckhurst tells Glamour UK.
Why choose a lob?
The main reason to choose a lob is for its combination of versatility, flexibility and style. "The lob is such a popular style because it's a striking look, and yet you don't have to commit to having short or long hair," explains Earl Simms, Kerluxe Celebrity Stylist.
"It's easy to manage and allows plenty of room for different looks and styles. If you are used to shorter hair, a lob haircut will be a super easy alternative, allowing you to put it up for going to the gym or whenever you don't feel like having it down," he adds.
What to ask your stylist?
“Be specific about length (collarbone is the magic spot),” Jack advises. “Ask if you need soft layers or texture for your hair type, and if your hair’s thick, get some weight taken out so it sits well.”
What about a lob with a fringe?
"Fringes totally change the vibe. Curtain bangs are the easiest, wispy bangs add softness, and a blunt fringe is great if you want something bolder," says Jack.
How to style a lob
“I love a loose, lived-in wave, super quick and always looks good. Or keep it sleek with a flat iron. A bit of texture on the ends always makes the cut look modern,” says Jack, though there are a myriad of options:
A shorter shape can often encourage your natural texture to do it's thing, which we love to see. The cut works on looser curls, waves and straight hair, or for very curly hair, ask your stylist for some invisible layers to avoid it looking boxy, unless of course, you're going for a graphic, sliced shape (which we're also massive fans of).

Poker straight, but seriously glossy hair look incredible cut into a long bob. Prep your hair with a nourishing hair mask to boost shine, then blast it with your hairdryer, using a downward motion. Finish by taming any flyaways and sealing the ends with a hair oil or serum.

Everywhere we look, the hair flick is the It-Girl detail that's adding a little extra flair to hair and the lob is the perfect length. It's simple enough to do and style in and out as you like. Just take a round brush or a pair of straighteners and roll the hair under and up to create a flipped-back shape – go as exaggerated as you want.

If you like oomph and volume and blow-dried lob is the way to go. And for extra body, side-flip it after you've finished styling.

To make it look as undone and effortless as possible, Earl says to, "put your slightly damp hair in some large braids, 2-3 maximum for a couple of hours. When you take them out, run your fingers through your hair, and add a small amount of styling cream to calm the ends", then leave to air dry.
Or for a slightly more 'done' look, “use a loose barrel curling wand through the hair haphazardly, leaving the ends out, then rough dry with the hairdryer before applying a styling cream from mid-lengths to ends.”

The opposite of flipped, we've also seen plenty of the curve cut and cup cut, which hugs the contours of your features, like your cheeks and jaw. The same can be applied to the lob. Take a round brush and roll hair down and round to create that curved shape just above the shoulders.
