Houston, the largest city in Texas with its Southern drawl, easygoing rhythm, diverse food scene, and near-perfect weather, has always been on my radar. So when the chance came to spend a few days in the city that gave us Queen Bey and the world’s largest rodeo, I didn’t hesitate. After all, what better place to ride the wave of Cowboy Carter than in Beyoncé’s hometown?
A rodeo wasn’t exactly on my 2025 bingo card. But there I was, stepping onto the legendary grounds of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, better known as RODEOHOUSTON, one of the biggest, boldest, and most unapologetic spectacles in Texas. This is where cowboy culture meets high-octane sports and over-the-top entertainment. For 20 action-packed days, this tournament-style competition brings together riders who go head-to-head in bareback riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, calf roping, and barrel racing.
Everywhere I turned, attendees were outfitted in their finest Western wear, an integral part of the rodeo experience and a clear point of pride for many Texans. Fashion at the rodeo is more than just attire; it’s a form of expression and a celebration of culture. The essentials? Cowboy boots, a statement belt buckle, and most importantly, a cowboy hat, which is non-negotiable.
To truly embrace the spirit of the rodeo, I knew I had to look the part. My first stop was Magnolia Mercantile Hats, a delightful boutique helmed by hat artist Katie Monsen. After exploring her thoughtfully curated selection of vintage scarves, pins, jewellery and trinkets sourced from across Texas and beyond, I watched as she brought my vision to life with a one-of-a-kind design. I chose pink and white silk scarves wrapped elegantly around the base, accented with feathers and jewellery.
As the city’s only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond hotel, The Post Oak Hotel is a destination in its own right. From the moment I arrived, flanked by a lineup of Bentleys and Rolls-Royces from the adjoining luxury dealership, it was clear that The Post Oak doesn't do subtle; it revels in extravagance. The lobby, which was designed as a love letter to the city, is an airy, marble-clad space dripping in gold accents and chandeliers. The artwork? Curated, museum-level pieces that give the entire space an elevated, gallery-like atmosphere.
My room was spacious, even by luxury standards. A king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton all but guarantees late starts, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of Houston’s skyline. Every detail is thoughtfully considered, from the intuitive touchscreen panel that controls lighting, climate, and shades, to the concealed 50-inch television that glides into view at the touch of a button. The marble bathroom is a spa-like sanctuary, with a deep soaking tub and a collection of Acqua di Parma products.
For those seeking the pinnacle of exclusivity, the Penthouse Suite redefines opulence. Occupying the 32nd and 33rd floors, and spanning an extraordinary 22,000 square feet, it is less a suite and more a private residence in the sky. A private elevator opens into a grand marble foyer, leading into an expansive open-concept living and dining space, its velvet furnishings, contemporary art, and 360-degree skyline views worthy of a private soirée.
The saying goes, that in Houston, the food is flavoured by its residents. The city’s culinary scene is diverse, offering a rich tapestry of flavours influenced by its dynamic melting pot of cultures. At Emma Jane, I’m enveloped in vintage charm within a repurposed house, where fresh flowers add a delicate touch, and fine porcelain china lends an air of graceful hospitality. Afternoon tea is a highlight, paired with rare teas like white mango pear and honeysuckle fig. Dining here feels like being in the home of a friend who just happens to be an exceptional chef. For something more opulent, Musaafer transported me to Maharaja’s palace with its soaring arches, chandeliers, and intricate carvings. The Michelin-starred menu took me on a journey through India’s diverse culinary regions, where each dish is artfully plated and packed with history.
At The Annie Café & Bar, I am greeted by white-washed walls, antique light fixtures and a bright open space. The menu features classic American dishes reimagined with bold Texan flavours. The bar, dressed in gold and marble, is a highlight, serving inventive cocktails. But the best surprise lies behind the kitchen, with a hidden speakeasy that hosts live music in an intimate setting. Loro is where Texas barbecue meets bold Asian flavours. Housed in a converted church, the space is bright and open, with long picnic-style tables and an industrial-chic aesthetic. Must-try sharables include brisket queso, sweet corn fritters, and smoked baby pork ribs.
If you’re a fan of chocolate and cocktails (who isn’t?), Case Chocolate is a must-visit. Their 90-minute tasting takes place in an intimate speakeasy-style setting. Handcrafted chocolates are infused with bold, unexpected flavours and come paired with a cocktail designed to elevate the taste. In the heart of River Oaks, you will find Bari Ristorante, a refined Italian eatery. Its interiors are sleek and warm, with copper accents, tall ceilings, and a striking bar. I began with an avocado crab cake, light, crisp, and subtly seasoned followed by the house-made pappardelle Bolognese, featuring a hearty three-meat ragù and delicate shavings of parmesan. At Urbe, I’m greeted by a space that’s playful and vibrant, with bright murals, open counters, and a friendly vibe. The tacos here are the stars, packed with perfectly seasoned meats like pork, fish, or octopus, topped with vibrant salsas and pickled vegetables.
Full from tasting the city’s incredible flavours, I turned my attention to fashion and the finer things, ready to explore the sophisticated side of Houston. Located within Houston’s most prestigious enclave, River Oaks District is a sophisticated blend of high fashion, fine dining, and polished leisure. As I strolled its tree-lined promenades, I felt a distinctive fusion of London's Bond Street and Southern charm, which creates an effortlessly cosmopolitan vibe.
At Christian Dior, I was offered a glimpse into their private event space, typically reserved for exclusive gatherings and couture clientele. Just steps away, I visited the recently opened Adam Lippes boutique. The space, minimalist yet refined, mirrors the designer’s aesthetic, with modern silhouettes tempered with timeless grace.
For jewellery, DeBoulle stands in a class of its own. This family-run house is known for its exceptional gemstones, exquisite craftsmanship, and deeply personal approach. The intimate showroom, thoughtfully appointed with plush seating and luminous displays, feels more like a private salon than a retail space. The district is also home to luxury brands Hermès, Loewe, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels, amongst others.
Sure, Houston’s got the rodeo, but it’s also a culinary capital with standout shopping, electric nightlife, and an energy that’s hard to miss. In Houston, everything is bigger, better, and buzzing with good vibes.
